The Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) 2005 Snowboard World Championships presented by Nokia, the most important snowboarding event next to the Winter Olympics, will be coming to Whistler, British Columbia from January 15-23, 2005, marking the first time the prestigious event will be held in North America.
Whistler will host 400 of the world's best snowboarding athletes from over 40 countries who will compete in the disciplines of "Halfpipe", "Big Air", "Snowboard-Cross", "Parallel Giant Slalom", and "TELUS Parallel Slalom" for the title of World Champion. The snowboarding championship event, one of the biggest lead-up events to the 2010 Olympics for Whistler and the province of British Columbia, is also an important qualifying event for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
"The FIS Snowboard World Championships is a world-class event and it is fitting that a world-class facility, such as Whistler, will play host to it," said Chris Wagner, FIS Snowboard Director. "The 2005 event will be the 6th World Championships, and we know that British Columbia will make it one to remember."
"As we prepare to host the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, we can showcase our province and people through world-class events such as these championships," said John Les, B.C. Minister for Small Business and Economic Development with responsibility for sport and the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. "Millions of international viewers will see first-hand just why Whistler and British Columbia are world-famous for winter sports and hospitality!"
In addition to 9 days of world-class snowboarding action, Whistler will come alive with the "Festival of Champions", a festival for spectators that will feature invitational snowboarding competitions featuring the world's top professionals, leading-edge entertainment, sponsor displays and sampling activities in North America's largest pedestrian village.
The FIS 2005 Snowboard World Championships presented by Nokia will feature athletes competing for the title of World Champion in all snowboard disciplines:
Halfpipe (HP - Olympic Discipline)
- The most popular competition format for the sport's participants, judged on a combination of amplitude, rotations, technical difficulty, smoothness of landings and overall impression in an "arena" type atmosphere.HP Hannah Teter (FIS photo)

Big Air (BA)
- One of the most exciting events to watch, Big Air riders take to the air jumping off a massive 60-foot table top jump performing gravity-defying off-axis spins and flips over a 100-foot distance.Snowboard Cross (SBX - Olympic Discipline)
- Riders race four at a time through a course of banked turns, jumps and mogul fields with the winners advancing through an elimination format. The 2005 SBX event will launch the week's competitions.SBX Ben Jacobellis, David Speiser, Drew Neilson, Dieter Krassnig (FIS photo)

Parallel Giant Slalom (PGS - Olympic Discipline) and TELUS Parallel Slalom (PSL)
- Head to head racing excitement at its best - an elimination ladder format is used to pair riders down until only two are left to battle it out on a 40-second dual course. PGS is an event featuring longer drawn-out turns and a longer course. PSL is a shorter quicker-turning sprint over a shorter course.PGS Amelie Kober (FIS photo)
